When should you retire in Frosthaven?
Updated
Board game: once your personal quest requirements are satisfied, retirement is mandatory during downtime, though you may first perform other downtime activities. Quest rewards normally unlock buildings, not automatically a new class.
The completion test
A follow-to-conclusion chain needs the explicit gold Scenario Rewards completion; its owner must participate. Collection goals use their stated requirements and retained resources. If you no longer meet a requirement when checked, you do not retire.
Retirement occurs only during downtime, not in a scenario or between linked scenarios without returning to Frosthaven. You may perform other downtime actions first, but cannot preserve a completed character indefinitely to avoid retirement.
Completion adds two prosperity and unlocks the quest's building envelope, using its alternate if needed. If both envelopes are open, follow the rulebook's random-scenario and blueprint substitutes. Spending 15 inspiration once at retirement can complete one additional quest using the specified draw-two procedure.
- Before retiring, finish desired downtime transactions and record your character. First retirement of each class also reads the section on its character mat.
- After retirement: items return to available supply, resources go to Frosthaven supply, and remaining gold is lost. The quest is removed from the game.
- New characters gain one perk mark per previous character retired by that player; do not use the campaign-wide total. A solo player's character lineages count separately.
- Track the result in campaign notes and consult buildings and crafting before spending.
Questions
Should I retire as soon as I can?
Start quest-chain scenarios early because calendar delays are unavoidable. Once the quest is satisfied, retirement is mandatory during downtime after any other downtime activities you choose to perform.
What if I abandon a character?
Their unlocked scenarios lock again as incomplete. Chests you already opened and random loot you kept stay.
