Frosthaven vs Gloomhaven

Updated

Both are Isaac Childres campaigns published by Cephalofair. Frosthaven does not require Gloomhaven. The shop copy says Frosthaven characters and items can cross over.

What I re-checked

Editorial decision: choose Jaws of the Lion for its built-in tutorial, learn-to-play guide and play-surface books. Choose Frosthaven if seasonal outpost construction appeals to your group. An unfinished Gloomhaven campaign you already own may be the practical first choice.

Gloomhaven second edition revises mercenary classes, items and scenarios, adds new narrative and events, and uses faction-based reputation. It is a separate purchase decision from continuing a first-edition campaign; do not assume every item number or class rule is interchangeable.

ProductPublished distinctionEditorial fit
FrosthavenStandalone 138-scenario campaign, seasons and player-built outpostGroups wanting substantial between-scenario progression
Gloomhaven first editionOriginal campaign; some expansions explicitly require this editionContinue an owned campaign rather than replacing it automatically
Gloomhaven second editionRedesigned classes/items/scenarios and faction reputationCompare the revised core game, not merely a printing correction
Jaws of the LionStandalone prequel, four mercenaries, tutorial and play-surface booksA structured teaching entry point

Questions

Should I buy Frosthaven or Gloomhaven first?

Our recommendation is Jaws of the Lion for its explicit teaching support, Frosthaven for outpost progression, or your existing unfinished Gloomhaven campaign to avoid another large purchase. Gloomhaven second edition deserves its own revised-game comparison, not a claim that Frosthaven is automatically the newest release.
